Pronunciation, take 2

At least once a week we’ll try to post a few new words in our “pronunciation” series. These are all completely serious/true and should be seen as a crash course in living in Israel. We’re not kidding! (Click here to visit part 1 of the series)

BMW – beh-em-veh

Bowling – bauw-leeeng

Handbrake – aaaaand-breakes

Ego – ehh-go

Supermarket – sue-pearrrr

Bitches – bee-ches

Beaches – bee-ches

…yes, it is true, Israelis are not able to distinguish between “bitches” and “beaches

Bitches and Beaches was the age old problem of my Filipino relatives. “Sooosi!! Take your cousin to dee bitch!”. But BMW.. well, that’s how we say it in German! Hollah!

  2. Same goes for shit and sheet.

  3. Ethan says:

legend has it, that when the queen of England visited Israel a decade or so ago, she insisted they build a new hotel for her to stay in, in Eilat. I don’t know how true this is, but that’s the story behind the royal beach hotel.

  4. TM says:

Thanks for a good morning laugh!

  5. Alon says:

    Very funny!!

Don’t forget “lis-Ten” for listen and “catral” for the CTRL button on the computer

  6. Kibalti Fak says:

Love the Royal Beach Hotel story.

The folks in my office tell me there is a typo, and a voiceover-o. It should be called aaaand-brakes with an s at the end. The plural of aaaand-brakes is aaaaand-brakesim

  7. thejook says:

    Thanks Kibalti.

  8. Paulus says:

Did you know? Not all latin words and names originate in English.

The German car manufacturer BMW should be pronounced as the German names of the letters, not the English ones. (/beː ɛm veː/)
Israelis are much closer to the right pronuncitation than the Americans.

The word ego originates in Latin and should be pronounced /ˈɛgo/, as pronounced in Hebrew.
